Description

Description

Macro-morphological Characteristics (Carpus)

  • Pileus (Cap): Diameter ranges from 15mm to 45mm. Exhibits a distinct, highly spherical to sub-globose morphology in the primordia and early maturation stages, rarely expanding to a fully plane (flat) state. This “donut-hole” phenotype is the primary morphological identifier.

  • Cuticle: Hygrophanous, smooth, and often tacky when humid, drying to a matte finish with fine, innate fibrils. Color ranges from a rich, deep caramel-gold to a lighter ochre-yellow at the margin, often retaining a darker, umbonate center.

  • Lamellae (Gills): Adnate to adnexed attachment. Initially pale grey, transitioning rapidly to a dark violaceous-brown or nearly black as basidiospore maturation occurs. Edges remain fimbriate and slightly paler.

  • Stipe (Stem): Typically short to medium in length (40mm–80mm) and relatively thick in proportion to the cap, often displaying a slight clavate (club-shaped) base. Surface is white to off-white, bruising blue-green (an indicator of oxidized psilocin) upon manipulation. Annulus is delicate, sub-membranous, and frequently disappears or becomes obscured by spore drop.

  • Context: Flesh is white, dense, and stains a deep indigo-blue rapidly upon sectioning.

Microscopy & Spore Print

  • Spore Print: Dark purple-black to deep violet.

  • Basidiospores: Dimensions: (11.5) 12.5–16.5 (17.5) µm x 7–9 µm. Sub-ellipsoid in profile, thick-walled, with a distinct, broad germ pore.

  • Basidia: Typically 4-spored, clavate.

  • Sterile Elements: Pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia are present, with cheilocystidia (marginal cells) typically being abundant, hyaline, and varying in shape from fusoid-ventricose to mucronate.

Mycelial Growth Characteristics (In vitro)

  • Rhizomorphic Tendency: The “Timbit” strain exhibits a strong predilection for highly rhizomorphic (rope-like) mycelial growth on standard Agar (MEA, PDA, or WBA) media. This indicates robust genetic vigor and efficient nutrient translocation capabilities.

  • Sectoring: Low incidence of spontaneous sectoring, indicating high genetic stability in culture.

  • Colonization Speed: Above average; on grain substrates (e.g., rye, millet, sorghum), full colonization is typically achieved within 10–14 days at optimal temperatures (22°C–24°C), provided adequate gas exchange is maintained.

  • Rhizo/Tome Ratio: Displays a high ratio of rhizomorphic to tomentose (fluffy) hyphae, making it well-suited for rapid expansion and isolation work.

Cultivation Parameters & Notes

  • Substrate: Versatile. Performs well on supplemented hardwood sawdust and sterilized grain spawn (monoculture). Exhibits excellent bio-efficiency on standard pasteurized manure-based bulk substrates (e.g., horse manure/coir/verm mix).

  • Fruiting Conditions:

    • Temperature: 20°C–23°C (fruit body development is denser and more potent at the lower end of the cubensis range).

    • Humidity: 90%–95% during pinning and maturation.

    • FAE (Fresh Air Exchange): Requires high levels of FAE to mitigate excessive aerial mycelium growth on the stipes and to prevent aborts, owing to its dense pinning habit.

  • Yield Potential: High. While individual fruit bodies are generally smaller than average due to their compact morphology, the strain compensates with extremely high-density pin-sets and multiple concentrated flushes (canopy density).

Genetic Lineage & Taxonomic Note

  • The “Timbit” strain is a stabilized isolation derived from a multi-spore isolation (MSI) originating from the Canadian Pacific Northwest. It is not a recognized species, but a distinct cultivar (cv.) within the Psilocybe cubensis species complex. Its unique spherical cap phenotype is the result of selective breeding focusing on specific recessive traits related to pileus expansion kinetics.
